Expansion of the Poland-Ukraine interconnector
Ukraine
Poland
Due to the replacement of russian gas with liquefied natural gas, which is transported by tankers (from Qatar, the United States, Asia, Egypt, etc.) to European LNG terminals, Europe will increasingly need gas storage facilities and reliable gas delivery routes. At the same time, Ukraine can provide temporary storage of at least 10 billion cubic meters of gas for Europe and its transportation to Eastern and Central Europe through an extensive gas transportation system.
Since April 2022, gas transmission capacity from Poland to Ukraine has been available as guaranteed on a daily basis and intermittent conditionally guaranteed on a quarterly and monthly basis (until March 1, 2024, it was offered in the amount of up to 4 mcm/d, and since March 1, 2024, due to productive cooperation of operators, it has increased to 6.4 mcm/d); 12.9 mcm/d can be guaranteed from Ukraine to Poland;
In order to strengthen cooperation in the natural gas market of Ukraine and Poland, including in terms of ensuring long-term guaranteed capacities, the gas transmission system operators of Ukraine (GTSOU) and Poland (GAZ-SYSTEM
S.A.) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in 2023 and established joint working groups. In particular, a working group on market issues was established to exchange information, experience and coordinate joint actions, including to ensure the expansion of the Poland-Ukraine interconnector.
In order to implement the project in full, it is necessary to ensure permanent guaranteed capacities for the transportation of natural gas from Poland to Ukraine at the level of 9 million cubic meters per day (in accordance with the demand assessment conducted in July-August 2023), which requires the construction of new facilities of the Polish GTS and certain reconstructions in Ukraine:
● DN 1000 Wronów - Rozwadów gas pipeline (length = 107 km) (Poland);
● gas pipeline DN 1000 Rozwadów - Strachocina (length = 140 km) (Poland);
● gas metering station in Hermanowice (Poland);
● reconstruction of the Komarno compressor station (Ukraine)

Demand assessment conducted in July-August 2023
The cost of the works on the part of Poland is EUR 384 million, on the part of Ukraine - EUR 82.3 million (excluding VAT).
