Main objectives:
  • The aim of the project is to promote introduction of modern and future-proof outdoor lighting technologies. Introduction of smart lighting technologies allow remote control the lights using mobile technologies such as 5G, enable use of motion sensors that achieve even greater energy savings and anticipate future applications of lampposts – from telecommunication base stations to urban sensor systems.
Short description:

Company LMT: Outdoor lighting, both globally and in Latvia, accounts for a significant share of energy consumption and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions. Recently, there has been a growing interest in replacing sodium-vapour lamps with LED lamps that are more energy efficient, even though LED technology is only part of the savings that are possible with today’s mobile infrastructure.

Upgrading the existing smart lighting technology to the latest outdoor lighting technology generation by equipping the lights with motion sensors and integrating them with the Internet of Things (IoT) network would achieve even greater energy savings for municipalities – in some cases even up to 75 percent.

Implementation of the project would require investments in lighting infrastructure throughout Latvia, as currently only part of local governments have implemented or are implementing this, mostly with the help of European support instruments.
