Main objectives:

Rail Baltica is a greenfield rail transport infrastructure project with a goal to integrate the Baltic States in the European rail network. The construction of the Salaspils Intermodal Logistics Centre is a inclusive part of Rail Baltica rail transport infrastructure project.

Short description:

One of the activities that could be of interest to the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund (hereinafter also referred to as the Fund) is the construction of the Salaspils Intermodal Logistics Centre, including the provision of railway infrastructure, energy, management and control subsystems in accordance with European technical specifications. The Salaspils terminal will connect the European standard-gauge 1435 mm railway with the 1520 mm railway, it is located in the Latvian industrial zone and will be connected with the A4/Via Baltica highway, providing access to the A6/Riga-Belarusian border and A12/Riga Russian-border highways, as well as Latvian ports and Riga International Airport. The total cost of construction of the Salaspils intermodal logistics centre and installing equipment at the centre is estimated at EUR 186 million, including plans to attract private funding of over EUR 34 million for the purchase of buildings and other equipment.

The most important benefits for Latvia include easier and more efficient access to the Baltic market, improved trade competitiveness, attractiveness to foreign investors, improving competitiveness of the Baltic transport industry. Significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are also expected.

The total cost of the project is EUR 1.96 billion. Activities of the project that do not qualify for financial support from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) are to receive private investment.
