The produced hydrogen will cater to refueling needs for ships, public transportation vehicles, and private vehicles. The hydrogen will be compressed to 350 bar for refueling ships and public transportation, and to 700 bar for private vehicles.
The project aims to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions, promote the use of hydrogen as a clean energy source, and support the local and national transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.
Klaipeda State Seaport Authority has been implementing the project "Development of green fuel (hydrogen) production in the port of Klaipeda", partly financed by European Union.
Project involves the establishment of 531 kg/24 h electrolysis plant and refueling stations at the Port of Klaipeda to produce hydrogen gas for on-site refueling purposes. Type of hydrogen production – PEM (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) technology.
Hydrogen production equipment with a total rated power of 3 MW is planned, which in addition to electrolysis (the planned capacity of the electrolyser up to 2 MW) also consists of coolers and the necessary electrical installations, a hydrogen compressor with storage facilities and hydrogen dispensers for refueling.
Planned capacity for the production of hydrogen per year: about 530 thousand tons. m3 /year in 2025, about 830 thousand. m3 /year in 2026, about 1,400 thousand. m3 /year in 2030 and beyond.
The green hydrogen production, storage and refuelling stations site location: territory of Klaipeda State Seaport (Nemuno 8A Klaipeda, 91191, Lithuania or Nemuno 40 Klaipeda, 93227, Lithuania).
- 2024-2025Construction
It is planned that hydrogen production will start in 1 April 2025.

The project is being implemented under the Economy Recovery and Resilience Plan “Next Generation Lithuania”, funded by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU. Klaipėda State Seaport Authority has been funded with the support amounting to EUR 4,813,550 to develop a green hydrogen production project in the port. The total value of the project excluding VAT is EUR 6,876,500.
