Main objectives:
  • The main aim of the project is to create a transport corridor from the Northern part of Europe to the South through the Republic of Lithuania, Republic of Poland, Slovak Republic, Hungary, Romania, Republic of Bulgaria, and Hellenic Republic (Greece).
  • On the Romanian territory it involves the construction of new infrastructure on most of its length or modernisation of some existing roads.
Short description:

The Via Carpatia transport corridor will be a new highway connection between Northern and Southern Europe, integrating the transport systems of the participating countries.

On the Romanian territory there are 3 corridors, as described below :

· Corridor 1 (Southern branch): Bors - Oradea - Arad - Timisoara -Lugoj — Drobeta Turnu Severin — Calafat

· Corridor 2 (Northen branch): Bors - Oradea - Gilau - Cluj Napoca - Turda - Sebes - Sibiu — Pitesti - Bucuresti - Constanta

· Corridor 3: (Eastern branch, towards Galati port) - Siret - Suceava- Pascani - Bacau -Focsani - Braila -Galati.

      • Nusfalau - Zalau section, Meses Tunnel and Zalau - Poarta Salajului section - public tender procedure for techincal design and works is ongoing
      • Poarta Salajului - Zimbor section and Mihaesti - Nadasel section - contract for technical design and works is ongoing and should be finalized in 2024

Budget:

The estimated values (for the works execution stage) of the different road sections which are not yet operational is presented below:

Corridor 1 • Drobeta Turnu Severin Lugoj: 1.345,61 mil. EUR (according to GTMP) • Drobeta Turnu Severin - Calafat: 50,80 mil. EUR (according to GTMP)

Corridor 2 • Nadaselu - Bors motorway section: 1.990,23 mil. EUR (excl. VAT) - based on data available at the level of CNAIR • Sibiu - Pitesti motorway: 3.327,18 mil EUR (excl. VAT) -based on data available at the level of CNAIR

Corridor 3 • Siret Suceava:196,20 mil EUR excl. VAT GTMP, the final value will be available afte completion) • Suceava -Pascani: 289.99 mil EUR excl. VAT (according to GTMP the final value will be available after completion • Pascani - Bacau: 388,94 mil EUR excl. VAT (according to GTMP, the final value will be available after the FS completion) • Bacau - Focsani: 428,30 mil EUR excl. VAT (according to GTMP, the final value will be available after the FS completion) • Focsani - Braila:297,92 mil EUR excl. VAT (according to GTMP, the final value will be available after the FS completion) • Braila - Galati: 155,75 mil EUR excl. VAT(according to the information available at CNAIR level)

The financing source foreseen at this stage for most of the investment objectives described above is represented by the EU Funds (through the Cohesion Fund and the European Regional Development Fund) , therefore the European Commission is envisaged as the major capital provider, with a potential co-financing rate of 85% of the identified eligible amounts for each objective.
